Lahore Traffic Police Issues 2.8m fine tickets in 1st Half of 2024

In a significant crackdown on traffic violations, the Lahore traffic police issued a staggering 2.8 million fine tickets during the first six months of 2024.

Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Lahore, Amara Athar, highlighted that the highest number of tickets, 800,000, were issued for lane and stop line violations. This underscores the ongoing challenges in maintaining road discipline in the bustling city.

Motorcyclists were also a major focus of the enforcement efforts, with 220,000 tickets issued for not wearing helmets. This measure aims to enhance rider safety and reduce head injuries in accidents.

Additionally, 274,000 tickets were issued to individuals driving vehicles or motorcycles without a valid license, reflecting the authorities’ commitment to ensuring that only qualified drivers are on the roads.

A significant number of violations were related to vehicle registration issues. The Lahore traffic police chief reported that 143,390 violators were caught driving with “applied for registration” (AFR) plates or without number plates altogether.

The crackdown on traffic violations is part of a broader effort by Punjab’s traffic authorities to improve road safety and enforce regulations. On June 22, Inspector General Police (IGP) Punjab, Dr. Usman Anwar, announced that traffic police offices across all districts of the province were actively providing driving licenses and other services to citizens.

The Punjab Police spokesperson released a one-day performance report of the Punjab Traffic Police, revealing that 1,340 citizens received driving licenses across the province, including Lahore, on the previous day. Legal action was taken against 13 vehicles emitting excessive smoke, with two vehicles impounded for causing pollution. Over 4,150 vehicles were fined for various traffic violations, contributing Rs2.5 million to the national treasury.

Since the launch of a special campaign on February 26, over 1.43 million citizens have been issued driving licenses. Action has been taken against more than 24,600 vehicles causing pollution, with 6,688 vehicles impounded. For traffic violations, over 3.248 million vehicles have been fined, resulting in a total of Rs1.72 billion being deposited into the national treasury.

These stringent measures reflect the Lahore traffic police’s ongoing commitment to improving road safety and compliance with traffic laws in the city.
