On the occasion of the 1st of Muharram, the martyrdom day of Amirul Momineen and the second Caliph, the leader of justice and equity, Hazrat Umar Farooq RA, is being observed today with great devotion and respect.
To honor Hazrat Umar Farooq’s martyrdom day, various parties and groups across the country have organized meetings, seminars, and events. Speakers will discuss the virtues and character of Hazrat Umar bin Al-Khattab, paying homage to him by highlighting his exemplary victories and golden achievements.
The second caliph, Hazrat Syedna Umar Farooq (RA), was born in Makkah. Hazrat Umar (RA) embraced Islam at the age of 35 in the sixth year of the Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) declaration of prophethood. The Prophet (PBUH) himself prayed for either Hazrat Umar or Abu Jahl to become a Muslim. After his conversion, Muslims prayed in the Kaaba for the first time.
Following the death of Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddiq, Hazrat Umar became the second Caliph of the Muslims. During his nearly 11-year reign, he expanded the Islamic Empire to 2.2 million square miles. Under his leadership, Muslims simultaneously defeated the Roman and Sassanid Empires in the Battle of Qadisiyyah and the Battle of Yarmouk. Beit al-Maqdis was also conquered during his caliphate.
On the 27th of Dhul Hijjah, 23 Hijri, a magician named Abu Lulu Feroz stabbed Hazrat Umar while he was performing the Fajr prayer, inflicting serious injuries. Hazrat Umar passed away three days later and was buried beside the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddiq (RA) in the holy chamber.
In other news, a public holiday has been officially announced today in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in observance of the martyrdom day of Hazrat Umar Farooq RA.
