In 2022, over 150,000 vehicles were stolen in Canada, averaging one vehicle every five minutes. Even Canada’s federal minister of justice is not immune to this crime wave. The Toyota Highlander XLE provided to them by the government has been stolen twice.
At the start of this summer, Interpol released a list that placed Canada among the top ten countries with the highest number of vehicle thefts. This list includes 137 countries. According to an Interpol spokesperson, the inclusion of Canada on this list is “surprising” because the country only began submitting data to Interpol in February this year.
Officials report that stolen vehicles are typically used in criminal activities, sold to citizens within Canada, or shipped overseas for resale. Since February, Interpol has tracked over 1,500 vehicles worldwide that were stolen from Canada. Additionally, around 200 stolen vehicles are being recovered weekly, many found at ports in other countries.
The situation is so dire that the Insurance Bureau of Canada has declared the rampant car thefts a ‘national crisis’.
