The federal government has approved a substantial increase in electricity prices for commercial, agricultural, and large consumers, aiming to address the fiscal challenges faced by the power sector.
Starting in July, the new rates will include an Rs8 per unit hike for commercial consumers, Rs6.5 for the agricultural sector, and Rs5.5 per unit for large consumers.
Specifically, the tariff for commercial consumers will rise by Rs8.04 per unit, bringing the new rate to Rs77.15 per unit. Agricultural consumers will see their basic tariff increase by Rs6.62 per unit, resulting in a new rate of Rs46.83 per unit. General services will experience a hike of Rs6.98 per unit, with the new tariff set at Rs61.03 per unit.
Large consumers are set to face an increase of Rs5.51 per unit, making their new rate Rs59.96 per unit. Despite these hikes, the government has decided to maintain the existing basic electricity tariff for industrial consumers.
The Power Division has formally informed the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) about the Federal Cabinet’s decision, marking a significant step in the government’s efforts to manage the economic pressures within the energy sector.
