Heavy Downpours Flood Lahore, Disrupt Life Across Punjab

Torrential rains lashed Lahore, with the Tajpura area receiving a staggering 242 millimeters, while several other localities experienced downpours exceeding 100 millimeters. This deluge led to inundated roads and submerged low-lying areas, causing significant disruption and distress to residents.

Lakshmi Chowk recorded 130 mm of rain, Pani Wala Talab 128 mm, Qurtuba Chowk 125 mm, Gulshan-e-Ravi 133 mm, Mughalpura 132 mm, Airport 71 mm, Upper Mall 123 mm, Samanabad 135 mm, Iqbal Town 128 mm, Gulberg Town 103 mm, Chowk Nakhuda 122 mm, Nishter Town 129 mm, Jail Road 55 mm, and Farrukhabad 119 mm.

The heavy rainfall was not confined to Lahore. Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and several other regions in Punjab also experienced intense showers, causing widespread issues for residents. Areas in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, including Nikyal and Barnala, along with Gujranwala, Jehlam, Mandibahauddin, Hafizabad, Sargodha, and Pakpattan, also reported substantial rainfall, leading to power outages in many places.

In Rawalpindi, neighborhoods like Dhok Kashmirian, Sadiqabad, and Dhok Kala Khan were heavily impacted. In Lahore, Devis Road, Nisbat Road, Gawalmandi, Krishan Nagar, Rajgarh, Mazang, Achara, Faisal Town, Garden Town, Gulberg, Mughalpura, Wasanpura, Badami Bagh, and Shahdara faced severe flooding.

The Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) managing director reported that staff had been deployed for water drainage in low-lying areas, and measures were in place to manage flooding in the Lai Nullah.

In response to the emergency, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has ordered immediate action to drain stormwater in all affected cities, including Lahore. She instructed local administration and WASA authorities to visit vulnerable areas and remain on-site until the rainwater is fully drained. Rescue 1122 and other departments have been put on high alert to prepare for emergency situations.

“Continuous work on the drainage of main arteries and low-lying areas is essential. Emergency measures are required to manage the situation created by the persistent rain,” stated Chief Minister Sharif. She emphasized that streets and markets should be cleared of rainwater promptly and that traffic police should ensure smooth vehicular flow on the roads.
