Rohit Valmiki, a Dalit man, was reportedly subjected to police brutality in Madhya Pradesh after overtaking a police vehicle. The incident has sparked outrage among local communities and raised concerns over the treatment of lower-caste individuals in India.
Valmiki’s ordeal began when he attempted to pass a police vehicle on a highway. This seemingly routine action led to an altercation with the police officers, resulting in Valmiki being physically assaulted. Despite filing a formal complaint, no action has been taken against the officers involved, highlighting the ongoing issues of accountability and justice in cases involving Dalits.
According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), over 60,000 crimes against Dalit Hindus were reported in 2021 alone. In the past five years, the number of hate crimes against lower-caste Hindus has exceeded 150,000. These figures underscore the pervasive nature of caste-based violence in India.
NBC News reports a staggering 66% increase in crimes against Dalit Hindus since the Modi government came to power. This period has also seen a significant rise in sexual violence, with a 45% increase in rape cases against Dalit women between 2015 and 2020. The NCRB further states that, on average, ten Dalit women and girls are reported raped every day in India.
The incident involving Rohit Valmiki is a stark reminder of the persistent discrimination and violence faced by Dalit communities. Activists and human rights organizations continue to call for stricter enforcement of laws protecting Dalits and more rigorous prosecution of offenders. As the nation grapples with these issues, the case of Rohit Valmiki adds to the urgent call for systemic change to ensure justice and equality for all.
