The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has initiated legal proceedings against prominent YouTuber Dhruv Rathee, summoning him to a Delhi court. This development arises from a series of videos Rathee uploaded during the recent election period, which were critical of the ruling party.
BJP spokesperson Suresh Karmasheel Nakhwa filed the defamation claim, asserting that Rathee’s videos contained inappropriate language and had the potential to incite violence. The complaint also accuses Rathee of inappropriately criticizing the media during the election.
This legal action comes on the heels of a separate case filed against Rathee by the Maharashtra police earlier this month.
Rathee’s controversial videos reportedly exposed alleged corruption and irregularities within the BJP during the election period. In response to these legal actions, some Indian journalists have voiced concerns that these measures against Rathee and other content creators may be attempts to suppress freedom of expression.
Adding to the tension, the Indian government imposed restrictions on social media last month, which many viewed as contradictory to the principles of free speech. According to Indian media reports, the government is applying pressure on both domestic and foreign journalists through various means, further fueling concerns over the state of free expression in the country.
