Karachi Ranked Second Riskiest City in the World by Forbes Advisor

Karachi, Pakistan’s largest urban metropolis, has been ranked the world’s second riskiest city in a recent list compiled by Forbes Advisor. The list, which evaluates 60 international cities across seven key metrics, places Karachi just behind Caracas, Venezuela.

The metrics considered in the ranking include crime, personal safety, health, infrastructure, natural disasters, and digital security. Karachi’s high ranking is primarily due to its significant personal security risks. According to Forbes Advisor, these risks encompass crime, violence, terrorist threats, natural disasters, and economic vulnerabilities.

The U.S. State Department has also rated Karachi poorly, ranking it second-worst for travel safety. The city has been flagged for its substantial infrastructure security risks, ranked fourth globally. A travel advisory published in June 2023 by the State Department highlights the ongoing terrorism and violence from extremist elements that pose significant threats to civilians, military, and police forces alike. Pakistan has been assigned a “Level 3” advisory, urging visitors to reconsider travel.

Caracas, the capital of Venezuela, tops the list as the riskiest city in the world. It faces the highest health security risks, characterized by poor healthcare services and infrastructure, along with the highest crime risks.

Yangon, Myanmar, holds the third position in the list. It is noted for having the highest digital security risks and ranks third for personal security risks due to crime, violence, terrorist threats, natural disasters, and economic challenges.

In stark contrast, Forbes Advisor also released the names of the world’s safest cities. Singapore tops this list, followed by Tokyo, Japan, and Toronto, Canada. Singapore boasts the best travel safety rating from the State Department, the lowest natural disaster risk, and the second-lowest health security risk. Tokyo ranks second due to its exemplary health security and travel safety standards. Toronto, securing third place, is noted for its overall safety and stability.

As Karachi grapples with these significant challenges, efforts to address these risks are critical for improving the city’s safety and quality of life for its residents and visitors.
