Masoud Pezeshkian was officially inaugurated as Iran’s new president during a ceremony held at the Iranian parliament on Tuesday. The event commenced at 16:00 local time in the main hall of the parliament in Tehran, marking a significant moment in the nation’s political history.
Pezeshkian, who became the 9th president of Iran, was sworn in amidst a notable international presence. Over 70 foreign delegates, including senior officials and secretaries-general from various regional and international organizations, were in attendance, as reported by the state broadcaster.
The swearing-in ceremony followed the formal endorsement of Pezeshkian by the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, on Sunday. Pezeshkian secured his position in the presidential runoff held on July 5, winning 53.7% of the vote against his opponent, former nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili, who received 44.3%, according to the Interior Ministry’s final results.
This election was precipitated by the tragic loss of President Ebrahim Raeisi, who died in a helicopter crash in May.
Following the inauguration, Mojtaba Yousefi, a member of the parliament’s presiding board, announced that President Pezeshkian would have 15 days to present his proposed ministers for a vote of confidence in the parliament. Additionally, Pezeshkian will officially relinquish his lawmaker mandate on July 31, as stipulated by parliamentary regulations.
