In a surprising move, John Schulman, one of the co-founders of OpenAI, has left the company to join its competitor, Anthropic. Schulman played a crucial role at OpenAI, contributing significantly to its alignment research.
A spokesperson from OpenAI expressed gratitude for Schulman’s work, stating, “We’re grateful for John’s contributions as a founding team member at OpenAI and his dedicated efforts in advancing alignment research. His passion and hard work have established a strong foundation that will inspire and support future innovations at OpenAI and the broader field.”
Schulman announced his decision on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. He explained, “I’ve decided to pursue this goal at Anthropic, where I believe I can gain new perspectives and do research alongside people deeply engaged with the topics I’m most interested in. I am confident that OpenAI and the teams I was part of will continue to thrive without me.”
In another significant development, OpenAI’s president and co-founder, Greg Brockman, is taking an extended leave until the end of the year. Brockman has been with the company for nine years and will use this time to “relax and recharge,” according to the company.
Additionally, Peter Deng, a product manager who joined OpenAI last year after leading products at Meta, Uber, and Airtable, has also recently departed from the company.
These changes mark a period of transition for OpenAI as it continues its mission in the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence.
