The United Nations has voiced serious concerns over the ongoing ethnic violence and human rights abuses in Manipur, India. This new report highlights a troubling increase in attacks on religious minorities in the region.
The UN’s recent findings condemn the widespread violations, pointing to a pattern of negligence by the Indian government. According to the report, Manipur has seen a disturbing rise in violence against religious minorities, a trend that echoes past incidents like the 2002 Gujarat riots and other cases of extrajudicial killings.
The report also criticizes the destruction of places of worship and private homes belonging to religious minorities. Despite acknowledging these issues, the Indian government has yet to take significant steps to address them, the UN states.
Additionally, the report underscores that no government officials have been held accountable for their roles in inciting violence, spreading hate speech, or targeting minority communities.
The United Nations has noted that while India has recognized incidents of sexual violence and other crimes during the Manipur riots, no comprehensive action plan has been proposed to resolve these issues.
Global human rights organizations have consistently raised alarms about these violations, but the Modi administration has shown little indication of addressing the concerns raised by the international community.
