Raza Nazar, a student from Karachi, has made history by becoming the first Pakistani to be elected President of the graduate community (MCR) at Oxford University’s prestigious Trinity College. This significant achievement marks a milestone for Pakistani students at one of the world’s most esteemed academic institutions.
Raza’s journey began in Karachi, where he studied at Karachi Grammar School before attending the United World College (UWC) in Singapore. His father, Yousuf Nazar, is an economist who frequently appears on Geo News as an analyst. Raza later pursued law at the London School of Economics (LSE), where he distinguished himself as the president of the LSE Law Society.
During his time at LSE, Raza co-founded the LSE Future of Pakistan conference, an annual forum that gathers students, experts, and ministers to discuss Pakistan’s future. His remarkable achievements earned him a spot among the Top 5 Future Lawyers (One’s To Watch) by Bright Network. Following this, he trained as a lawyer at Slaughter and May, a renowned law firm in the UK.
At Oxford, Raza pursued the Bachelor of Civil Laws (BCL), a master’s level qualification highly regarded in the Common Law world. He is one of the few Pakistanis to have completed the BCL, joining the ranks of notable figures such as former Prime Minister Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy and former President Wasim Sajjad. Raza excelled in his studies, finishing second in the year for Jurisprudence and Political Theory. He also received several prestigious scholarships, including the Oxford Pakistan Programme (OPP) Scholarship.
In an interview with Geo News, Raza expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to make a positive impact at such a historic institution. “I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity to make a positive impact in an institution that is over four centuries old. We have such a talented and diverse group of students, ranging from quantum physicists to solar cell researchers, from all over the world,” he said.
Raza also highlighted the work of the Oxford Pakistan Programme under Professor Adeel Malik, which supports Pakistani scholars and conducts groundbreaking research. Raza’s own research focuses on constitutional theory and autonomy, areas that he is passionate about.
Reflecting on his journey, Raza credited his parents for their inspiration and encouragement. “I am thankful to my parents for inspiring me and encouraging me throughout my journey,” he said.
Trinity College, founded in 1555, has a rich history and has produced numerous award-winning academics, successful leaders, and Nobel laureates. Raza’s election as MCR President adds another chapter to the college’s storied legacy.
