Today marks the 7th death anniversary of Dr. Ruth Pfau, a German doctor who dedicated her life to eradicating leprosy in Pakistan. Dr. Pfau, often referred to as the “Mother Teresa of Pakistan,” made a significant impact on the country’s healthcare system, particularly in the fight against leprosy.
Born on September 9, 1929, in Leipzig, Germany, Dr. Pfau studied medicine in 1957. In 1961, she made the life-changing decision to move from Germany to Pakistan, where she began her mission to help those suffering from leprosy, a disease that was highly stigmatized at the time.
Her tireless work and dedication to the cause earned her numerous prestigious awards in Pakistan, including the Hilal-i-Pakistan, Hilal-i-Imtiaz, Nishan-i-Quaid-i-Azam, and Sitara-i-Quaid-i-Azam.
Dr. Ruth Pfau passed away on this day in 2017 in Karachi, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, service, and love for humanity. Her contributions continue to be remembered and honored in Pakistan and around the world.
