Since the Taliban’s rise to power, the living conditions for Afghan citizens have significantly worsened. The country’s economic collapse and widespread famine have made life extraordinarily difficult for the population.
According to a recently published report by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), “48 percent of Afghans live below the poverty line.” The report also highlights that 83,000 people have been affected by recent heavy rains, while 12.4 million Afghans are food insecure.
Critically, the Taliban are accused of diverting international aid intended for humanitarian relief towards terrorism and other harmful activities in the region. Environmental challenges, coupled with the economic crisis, are exacerbating the humanitarian situation.
The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) reports that “34 million Afghans are living in poverty,” with the security crisis in the country leading to a sharp decline in humanitarian aid. The situation is further complicated by the Taliban’s ban on the employment of women officials in civil society organizations, which has negatively impacted the economy.
As Afghanistan’s institutions teeter on the brink of collapse, the Taliban remains focused on promoting extremism, leaving the country’s future in peril.
