In a thrilling final at the Paris Olympics, Algerian boxer Imane Khelif achieved a historic victory by clinching the gold medal in the women’s welterweight boxing category. Khelif triumphed over China’s Yang Liu, marking a significant milestone for both herself and her country.
This win is especially noteworthy considering the recent controversy involving Khelif and Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu-ting. Both athletes faced disqualification from the 2023 World Championships due to a controversial sex chromosome test imposed by the International Boxing Association (IBA). However, the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which oversees the Olympic Games, rejected these tests and allowed Khelif and Lin to compete in Paris.
The atmosphere in the stadium was electric, with fans waving Algerian flags in support of Khelif. Her victory not only earned her the first Olympic gold medal in boxing for Algeria but also highlighted her incredible perseverance in overcoming the challenges and debates surrounding gender testing in sports.
In addition to Khelif’s gold, Janjaem Suwannapheng from Thailand and Chen Nien-chin from Taiwan secured the bronze medals in the same event.
