The Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) extensive renovation plans for stadiums in Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi have cast doubt on the national team’s upcoming three-match Test series against England. This series is part of the ongoing International Cricket Council (ICC) World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25.
Scheduled to kick off on October 7, the first Test is slated for Multan, followed by the second in Karachi from October 15 to 19, and the third in Rawalpindi from October 24 to 28.
However, the PCB’s preparation for hosting the Champions Trophy in 2025 includes upgrading key venues such as Karachi’s National Stadium, Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium, and the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. Delays in construction are causing concerns over the feasibility of holding the series as planned. Halting renovations could impact Pakistan’s readiness for the prestigious 2025 event.
While playing behind closed doors is not seen as a viable solution, the PCB is considering alternative venues, including the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Sri Lanka. However, with the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup set to be held in Dubai and Sharjah from October 3 to 20, Abu Dhabi emerges as the only option within the UAE.
The PCB is expected to finalize its decision soon, after discussions with the England Cricket Board (ECB).
The pressure on Pakistan to perform is heightened following their unexpected loss to Bangladesh, which dropped them to eighth position in the WTC standings. The upcoming series against England is crucial for the Green Shirts if they are to remain competitive in the championship race.
