Former US President and Republican figurehead Donald Trump has declared his readiness to engage in presidential debates with current Commander-in-Chief Joe Biden. Trump, currently facing four criminal indictments, emphasized that it is an “obligation” for the final candidates to debate, especially with the November elections looming.
Despite his confidence in broad national support, the 77-year-old business magnate has refrained from participating in any Republican presidential debates so far. His sole competitor within the party, former US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley, remains determined to stay in the race.
Trump expressed his willingness to engage in debates “as many as necessary,” even suggesting a prompt start. However, he cast doubt on Biden’s willingness to participate, stating, “I don’t think [Biden’s] going to debate though. I really don’t think so.”
With the first presidential debates scheduled for September, analysts speculate that Trump’s decision to skip the Republican debates might give Biden a reason to consider opting out of the election debates altogether. Despite legal challenges, recent polls indicate a narrow lead for Trump in several swing states, potentially reshaping the electoral landscape in favor of the Republican candidate.
