Former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley is reportedly suspending her presidential campaign after facing losses on Super Tuesday. This move leaves former President Donald Trump unopposed in the Republican race, potentially setting the stage for a rematch with President Joe Biden in November.
According to ABC News, Haley, despite not immediately endorsing Trump, is expected to address the press in Charleston, South Carolina. Despite her early bid and over a year of campaigning, she became the last candidate to exit the race.
Haley’s campaign focused on bringing in a “new generational leader” and challenging 20th-century political norms. Though she started as a relative dark horse, she gradually became Trump’s top contender. However, setbacks in New Hampshire and her home state of South Carolina proved challenging.
While Haley won Washington, DC’s primary just before Super Tuesday, it wasn’t enough. Despite attracting sizable crowds, her attempts to distinguish herself from Trump included expressing concerns about his commitment to the Constitution and calling his likely nomination “suicide for our country.”
Rumors of a third-party bid were consistently denied by Haley. In her address before South Carolina’s primary, she clarified that her purpose was not solely to oppose Trump but to voice concerns about both former and current presidents.
