As the Pakistan Super League season nine (PSL 9) draws closer to its climax, all eyes are on the upcoming final showdown between Multan Sultans and Islamabad United. But amidst the excitement, an interesting revelation has emerged – Multan Sultan’s spin bowling coach, Alex Hartley, is observing the holy month of Ramadan along with the rest of the team.
In an interview with BBC 5 Live Sport, Hartley, a former English cricketer, shared her decision to fast during Ramadan. She expressed a desire to empathize with her team members and understand the challenges they face while playing after fasting all day.
“It is Ramadan and the lads are fasting. So I thought I really want to understand how they’re feeling when they get to the game. I think it is only fair that the players are doing it, so I should join them [in fasting],” explained Hartley.
Acknowledging the difficulties she encounters during fasting, Hartley described her daily routine as “very hard.” She detailed the limited eating window, starting from early morning till just before sunset, which requires adjusting her sleep schedule as games commence late in the evening.
“We have just broken our fast now after we fasted all day. I have had some dates and some salad. We can eat till 4 am and then we don’t eat again till 6:40 pm the next day. It is hard, so hard,” she elaborated.
Multan Sultans made history by becoming the first team to secure a spot in the PSL 9 final after defeating Peshawar Zalmi in the Qualifier on March 14th. Led by Mohammad Rizwan, the team chased down the target of 147 runs with ease, marking their fourth consecutive final appearance.
