Pakistan has formally thrown its hat into the ring for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for a two-year term from 2025 to 2026. The announcement came from Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Munir Akram, during a lively reception at the UN in celebration of Pakistan Day.
The event saw a packed room with attendees including UN General Assembly (UNGA) President Dennis Francis, top diplomats, officials, members of academia, media, civil society, and the Pakistani diaspora.
Ambassador Akram highlighted Pakistan’s dedication to championing the causes of the Global South and promoting cooperative multilateralism. He emphasized Pakistan’s adherence to the principles of the UN Charter, stressing themes like non-interference in internal affairs, sovereignty, and the right to self-determination.
Furthermore, Akram pointed out Pakistan’s significant contributions to various UN bodies, including the UNSC, Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), Human Rights Council, and Group of 77. He also highlighted Pakistan’s extensive involvement in UN peacekeeping missions, with over 200,000 service members deployed across 46 missions worldwide.
