PM Shehbaz pledges to uphold judiciary’s independence amid allegations

In a promising turn of events, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has taken decisive action in response to allegations of interference in judicial affairs. Following a crucial meeting with Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa, the Prime Minister has announced the formation of a commission to thoroughly investigate the matter.

The initiative comes on the heels of concerns raised by six judges of the Islamabad High Court (IHC), who penned a letter to the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) citing alleged interference by intelligence agencies in judicial matters. The judges’ courageous act triggered widespread calls for accountability and transparency within the legal community.

Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, speaking after the meeting, conveyed the government’s firm commitment to ensuring the independence of the judiciary. He emphasized that no compromises would be made in upholding the sanctity of judicial processes.

Tarar further disclosed that the commission would be constituted under the Commission of Inquiry Act and would be overseen by a reputable retired judge to ensure impartiality. He reassured the public that the government would not hesitate to divulge the findings of the investigation, underscoring the importance of transparency in such matters.

The swift response from the government underscores its recognition of the seriousness of the allegations and its dedication to upholding the rule of law. The decision to convene a commission reflects a proactive approach to address the concerns raised by the judiciary, demonstrating a commitment to accountability and justice.

In addition to government action, the legal fraternity has also rallied behind the cause, with bar associations and senior lawyers advocating for a thorough investigation. A constitutional petition has been filed in the apex court, seeking an open court investigation into the allegations, highlighting the widespread demand for transparency and accountability.

The developments mark a significant step towards safeguarding the independence of the judiciary and ensuring that no undue influence undermines the integrity of the legal system. With the commission set to commence its probe, there is renewed hope for justice and accountability in the face of adversity.
