In a significant turn of events in Pakistani politics, Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has been elected as the Amir (chief) of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), a prominent religious and political party in the country.
The announcement of his election came following a decision made by the majority of Jamaat-e-Islami members on Thursday.
Hafiz Naeem, a civil engineer by profession hailing from Karachi, emerged victorious in the selection process for the party chief, which occurs every five years. His victory comes after the party’s central consultative body, the Markazi Shura, proposed three names for the leadership role. Notable figures like Sirajul Haq and Liaquat Baloch were among the candidates, but ultimately, Hafiz Naeemur Rehman secured the position.
The outgoing chief, Sirajul Haq, had held the position since 2014, marking a decade-long tenure. He follows in the footsteps of influential leaders such as Syed Munawar Hassan, Qazi Hussain Ahmed, Mian Tufail Muhammad, and Maulana Syed Abul Ala Maududi, who have all led Jamaat-e-Islami in the past.
Founded in 1941 by Maulana Syed Abul Ala Maududi, Jamaat-e-Islami holds significant historical importance within Pakistan’s political landscape, having played a pivotal role in shaping the country’s ideological and political discourse over the decades.
