NDMA issues warning for intense rainfall & thunderstorms across Pakistan

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a directive to all relevant authorities, including Provincial Disaster Management Authorities (PDMAs) and District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs), to brace for intense rainfall and thunderstorms across Pakistan until April 29.

In response to weather forecasts indicating upcoming severe weather conditions, the NDMA has instructed departments to maintain vigilance and readiness to address any emergent situations. A press release emphasized the importance of pre-positioning machinery and ensuring the availability of staff in vulnerable areas.

Local departments have been urged to inform residents living near riverbanks and nullahs about potential increases in water flows and to facilitate timely evacuations from low-lying and flood-prone areas according to evacuation plans. Citizens have been advised to take precautions such as avoiding electric poles and weak infrastructure, and refraining from traveling through waterways.

The National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) and various weather models have predicted a series of moderate to intense weather systems from April 17 to 29, which are expected to bring heavy rain, thunderstorms, and hailstorms across the country.

Farmers, cattle owners, tourists, and travelers have been cautioned to remain vigilant, check weather and road conditions before traveling, and take necessary steps to protect crops, livestock, and personal safety.

For updates and information, citizens are encouraged to monitor local weather forecasts and advisories closely.

The forecast indicates that a weather system will enter Pakistan on April 17, leading to heavy rainfall and thunderstorms until April 22. Balochistan will be impacted from April 17 to April 19, followed by Punjab and Sindh from April 18 to April 19.

Upper Punjab will experience effects from April 18 to April 21, while Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir will be affected from April 17 to 22.

A weaker weather system is expected on April 23, with low rainfall and thunderstorms until April 24. Balochistan and upper Punjab will be affected from April 23 to 24, with KP, GB, and AJK also impacted.

A strong weather system is forecasted to enter Pakistan on April 25, bringing heavy rain, thunderstorms, and hailstorms until April 29. Balochistan will be affected from April 25 to April 29, while Sindh will experience impacts on April 25, 26, and 28. South Punjab will face impacts from April 27 to April 28, and upper Punjab from April 26 to April 29, with KP experiencing effects from April 25 to April 29, potentially impacting GB and AJK from April 25 to April 29.

Flash floods are expected in vulnerable areas such as Khuzdar, Ziarat, Zhob, Sherani, Muslim Bagh, Quetta, Pishin, Kech, Panjgur, Gwadar, and Turbat, along with flooding in low-lying areas, particularly in southern western Balochistan.
