Pro-Palestinian campus protests sweep across US, hundreds arrested

A wave of pro-Palestinian campus protests has surged across the United States this week, resulting in the arrests of hundreds of demonstrators at universities nationwide. The epicenter of these demonstrations appears to be New York’s Columbia University, where students have vowed to continue protests until their demands are met.

At Columbia University, protesters are demanding the severance of ties with Israeli academic institutions and the disinvestment of funds from entities connected to Israel, among other demands. Similar protests with parallel demands have erupted on campuses across the country.

The protests have brought together a diverse coalition of students, including Palestinians, Arabs, Jews, and Muslims, all unified in their condemnation of Israel’s actions in Gaza.

Latest Developments:

Columbia University:

The faculty senate is poised to vote on a resolution admonishing President Minouche Shafik over her handling of the protests, particularly her decision to authorize police intervention.

University of Southern California:

The university has canceled its main commencement ceremony next month, citing “new safety measures” amidst ongoing protests. Nearly 100 individuals have been arrested on campus.

Emory University:

A total of 28 people were arrested during protests, prompting criticism of excessive force by Georgia State Patrol. Democratic lawmakers in Georgia have condemned the tactics employed.

Brown University:

Around 130 students have been identified for allegedly violating the school’s conduct code by participating in encampments on campus. Disciplinary actions are pending.

Emerson College:

Over 100 individuals were arrested, and four police officers injured during a protest clearing. The college president acknowledged the passion driving the protests.

Indiana University:

Thirty-three people were detained following encampment protests on campus.

George Washington University:

Metropolitan Police were called in to relocate an “unauthorized protest encampment” after repeated requests by campus authorities went unheeded.

University of California, Los Angeles:

Demonstrations with encampments were reported on Thursday.

Northeastern University:

An encampment formed, with protesters seen forming a human chain around several tents.

Other Campuses:

Protests have taken place at various universities since last Thursday, including Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Texas at Austin, University of Michigan, University of New Mexico, University of California, Berkeley, Yale University, Harvard University, Princeton University, and University of Minnesota’s Twin Cities campus.

The widespread nature of these protests underscores the growing concern and activism surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict on American college campuses. As tensions continue to escalate, the response from both university administrations and law enforcement remains under scrutiny.
