Tech mogul Elon Musk’s latest venture, xAI, has made waves in the tech community with reports confirming a staggering $6 billion funding round, valuing the company at $18 billion pre-money. According to sources from both TechCrunch and The Information, the funding round is expected to be finalized in the coming weeks.
Musk, renowned for his involvement in groundbreaking projects like Tesla and SpaceX, co-founded xAI just 10 months ago. The company’s recent unveiling of its AI chatbot, “Grok,” reminiscent of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, has added fuel to the excitement surrounding the venture.
Among the investors participating in the funding round are notable names like Sequoia Capital and Future Ventures, co-founded by Musk’s close associate Steve Jurvetson. Additional participants are anticipated to include Valor Equity Partners and Gigafund VC firms.
The emergence of xAI marks Musk’s renewed foray into the realm of artificial intelligence following his departure from OpenAI in 2018. Criticizing OpenAI’s shift in direction, Musk has positioned xAI as a direct competitor in the AI landscape.
According to Mashable, xAI aims to integrate seamlessly with Musk’s existing ventures, including Tesla, SpaceX, The Boring Company, and Neuralink. By leveraging data from these enterprises, xAI seeks to “master the physical world,” with a particular focus on assisting Tesla in developing self-driving cars and its robot, Optimus.
Despite its ambitious goals, xAI’s flagship product, Grok, has faced criticism for underperformance, as reported by experts cited by Mashable. However, Musk remains undeterred, expressing confidence in the future iteration, Grok 2, currently in development.
In addition to its technological pursuits, xAI is actively recruiting talent across various disciplines, offering competitive compensation packages and employee benefits, including medical, dental, and vision insurance, as well as unlimited paid time off.
