President and PM’s message on International Labour Day

As the world commemorates International Labour Day today, leaders in Pakistan have come forward with pledges to uphold the dignity and rights of workers. President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif have issued messages recognizing the historic struggles of labourers and emphasizing the importance of their contributions to the nation’s development.

President Zardari’s Message:

President Zardari, in his special message, lauded the commendable contributions of labourers towards Pakistan’s development. He emphasized the need to safeguard their rights, ensure fair wages, and provide safe working conditions. Recognizing the challenges faced by the working class, including inflation and unemployment, Zardari called for measures to improve their welfare, including adequate wages, health coverage, and educational facilities for their children.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s Commitment:

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif echoed Zardari’s sentiments, expressing the government’s commitment to enhancing labour welfare and aligning domestic legislation with global standards. He highlighted the priority placed on occupational safety and health, as well as plans for a National Tripartite Labour conference focusing on safety measures. Sharif praised the relentless efforts of labourers and pledged to improve their working and living conditions through initiatives such as better housing, education, healthcare, and social security benefits.

Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori’s message:

Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori saluted the historical struggle of labourers, labeling them the “backbone” of the country’s development. However, he emphasized the current challenges faced by workers, including unemployment and low wages, exacerbated by famine. Tessori urged for a significant increase in the minimum wage to ensure basic necessities for workers and called upon industrialists and traders to contribute to their welfare. He also announced initiatives such as free ration distribution through the Governor’s House and the establishment of the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) to promote prosperity among workers.

On this International Labour Day, Pakistani leaders have reiterated their commitment to supporting the rights and welfare of labourers. Their messages underscore the importance of recognizing and addressing the challenges faced by workers and implementing measures to improve their livelihoods.
