Ethnic, tribal riots engulf Manipur amidst election chaos

As the fervor of India’s election season grips the nation, Manipur finds itself engulfed in the flames of ethnic and tribal strife. The once vibrant state now witnesses a harrowing wave of violence that has disrupted not only daily life but also the democratic process.

Tribal clashes in Manipur have escalated to such an extent that Lok Sabha candidates find themselves unable to carry out their election campaigns. The people of Manipur, disillusioned and distressed by the ongoing turmoil, have boycotted the general elections altogether.

Despite the escalating crisis, the Modi government’s response has been criticized for its perceived inaction in addressing the root causes of the riots. The failure to quell the unrest has only deepened the public’s frustration and dismay.

The toll of the violence is staggering, with over 220 lives lost and more than 10,000 individuals displaced as a result of the clashes. The recent deaths of two youths have only added to the gravity of the situation, further heightening tensions in the region.

Critics point to the Modi government’s inability to effectively manage the crisis, both at the federal and provincial levels. With only two seats allotted to represent Manipur in the 543-seat Lok Sabha assembly, both held by the BJP, concerns over adequate representation and governance have been amplified.

International condemnation has poured in, with the United Nations and other human rights organizations decrying the blatant violations of human rights in Manipur. Despite mounting pressure, the Modi government’s response has been characterized by indifference, drawing sharp rebuke from the international community.

The conflict between the Meiti and Kuki tribes, which ignited the current wave of violence, has raged on for over a year, plunging Manipur into a state of perpetual unrest. As the election process unfolds, reports of violence and clashes continue to emerge, further exacerbating an already dire situation.
