AJK govt accepts all demands of AAC protestors

After four days of wheel-jam strikes and violent protests against increases in electricity prices and taxes, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Prime Minister Chaudhry Anwarul Haq has declared that the state government has conceded to all demands put forth by the Awami Action Committee (AAC).

Speaking at a press conference in Islamabad on Monday, Prime Minister Anwar stated, “No one can dismiss two fundamental demands concerning affordable bread and electricity.” He affirmed that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had pledged complete support to address the issues facing the people of AJK.

Anwar emphasized that the government had no intentions of obstructing the peaceful struggle of the AJK populace, nor would it interfere with such movements in the future. Despite law violations, he noted the government’s demonstration of tolerance and patience, citing over 100 injured policemen in clashes with protesters, while no protesters were harmed.

Accepting all demands outlined by the AAC, the AJK government promptly issued notifications regarding subsidies for power and essential food items. Anwar expressed hope for the restoration of peace in the region following the implementation of these eagerly awaited measures.

Referring to the subsidies as a demonstration of Pakistan’s “special connection” with the region, Anwar credited the top political and military leadership for their unwavering support and respect for the people of AJK. He announced a significant allocation of Rs23 billion in funds from Islamabad to the AJK government.

Anwar acknowledged Pakistan’s establishment and the army chief for their proactive efforts in addressing the issues of the AJK populace. He confirmed that the notifications would take immediate effect and constitute a permanent arrangement to be included in the upcoming budget for the fiscal year 2024-25.

According to the notification, the price of flour has been reduced from Rs3,100 to Rs2,000 per 40 kilograms. Additionally, revised electricity tariffs will stand at Rs3 per unit for usage between 1-100 units, Rs5 per unit for usage between 100-300 units, and Rs6 per unit for usage exceeding 300 units.

Commercial electricity rates have been set at Rs10 per unit for consumption up to 300 units, with usage above 300 units priced at Rs15 per unit.
