In a reaffirmation of bilateral cooperation, the United States reiterated its commitment to supporting Pakistan in its fight against terrorism and border issues. The announcement came during a press briefing in Washington, where US State Department’s Principal Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel highlighted the shared intention to enhance communication on terrorism between the two nations.
The discussions followed recent security talks between Islamabad and Washington, focusing on preventing and deterring terrorist groups. Key areas of collaboration include counter-IED investigations and technical assistance at Pakistan’s western border.
The renewed support comes as Pakistan grapples with a surge in terrorist attacks targeting civilians, law enforcement agencies, and security forces across the country. Pakistan has repeatedly raised concerns with the interim Afghan Taliban government over the use of Afghan soil by militant organizations, including the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).
The high-level meeting in Washington, co-chaired by officials from both countries, centered on the counter-terrorism landscape in the region. Both sides recognized the importance of partnership in countering ISIS-Khorasan, also known as Daesh, the TTP, and other terrorist organizations to enhance regional security.
A recent security report by the Centre for Research and Security Studies (CRSS) revealed alarming statistics for the first quarter of 2024. The report documented a significant number of fatalities and injuries, with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan provinces bearing the brunt of violence. Notably, these two provinces accounted for the majority of fatalities, underscoring the urgent need for intensified counterterrorism efforts.
The collaborative efforts between the United States and Pakistan signify a commitment to addressing transnational terrorism threats and fostering bilateral and regional cooperation in combating terrorism.
