In a fiery address to the National Assembly on Wednesday, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari issued a stern warning to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), cautioning them of repercussions if they fail to apologize for the May 9 riots.
Bilawal condemned what he termed as “terrorism” perpetrated by the opposition leadership during the violent protests on May 9, accusing them of disrespecting the monuments of martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the country. He specifically singled out PTI, describing them as a “non-serious party” for refusing to apologize.
The warning comes in response to PTI founder Imran Khan’s refusal to apologize for the riots during an informal conversation with journalists in Adiala Jail on May 8. Khan distanced his party from the violent protests that erupted following his arrest, further escalating tensions between PTI and PPP.
During his address, Bilawal criticized PTI’s alleged lack of interest in democratic institutions and accused them of prioritizing personal grievances over national issues. He urged PTI to refrain from practicing “double standards” in politics and emphasized the importance of dialogue and unity in addressing Pakistan’s challenges.
Amidst opposition lawmakers’ protests, Bilawal commended President Asif Ali Zardari for focusing on national issues during his speech and called for collective efforts from both the government and opposition to address public concerns. He also demanded special incentives for farmers and decisive action to resolve the wheat import controversy.
As tensions between PPP and PTI escalate, Bilawal’s warning underscores the growing political rift in Pakistan’s political landscape, setting the stage for further confrontation between the two parties.
