Inter Miami’s formidable five-match winning streak came to an end on Wednesday as they were held to a goalless draw by Orlando City, with star player Lionel Messi sidelined due to injury.
Messi, who had been instrumental in Miami’s recent victories, was absent from the lineup due to a knee injury, leaving fans and teammates disappointed. Despite assurances from Miami about the minor nature of Messi’s injury and his participation in recent training sessions, the decision was made to rest him for the midweek fixture against Orlando.
With Messi missing, the spotlight turned to his former Barcelona teammate Luis Suarez, who entered the game as one of the league’s top scorers with 11 goals. However, Suarez failed to find the back of the net despite early opportunities, as Orlando’s goalkeeper Pedro Gallese thwarted his attempts.
Miami’s attacking efforts, led by Suarez and Paraguayan midfielder Matias Rojas, created chances, with Robert Taylor coming close to breaking the deadlock. However, Orlando’s defense held firm throughout the match.
Orlando, gradually gaining momentum as the game progressed, tested Miami’s goalkeeper Drake Callender through Martin Ojeda and Luis Muriel. Both sides tightened their defense, resulting in limited clear-cut opportunities.
In the second half, Orlando nearly capitalized on a chance, but Muriel hesitated and lost possession inside the box. As the game neared its conclusion, Orlando pressed forward in search of a winning goal, with Japanese substitute Yutaro Tsukada missing a promising opportunity in the dying moments, sending his shot off target.
The goalless draw marked the end of Inter Miami’s winning streak, highlighting the importance of Messi’s presence on the field and the challenges they faced without him.
