SC takes Suo Moto notice of Senator Faisal Vawda’s criticism against IHC judges

The Supreme Court of Pakistan has initiated suo motu proceedings following a fiery press conference by independent Senator Faisal Vawda, where he launched a scathing attack on judges of the Islamabad High Court (IHC), Geo News sources reported on Thursday.

In his address on Wednesday, Vawda lashed out at the IHC judges for their allegations of interference by intelligence agencies in judicial matters, urging an end to the targeting of institutions. “Stop targeting the institutions, enough is enough. If there is any interference by institutions, then provide evidence and we will stand together [against it],” Vawda declared during the press conference.

Insiders familiar with the matter revealed that a bench, led by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa, is scheduled to convene tomorrow (Friday) to deliberate on the suo motu notice. The bench includes Justice Irfan Sadaat and Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan.

Vawda’s press conference followed a formal request he lodged with the IHC registrar, demanding the disclosure of correspondence between the then-IHC chief justice Athar Minallah and IHC’s Justice Babar Sattar regarding the latter’s possession of a green card.

The senator’s letter was prompted by a social media campaign targeting Justice Sattar, accusing him of holding US citizenship and having business interests in a private school within Pakistan.
