Pakistan to begin exporting locally manufactured SUVs

In a significant development for Pakistan’s automotive industry, the Ministry of Industries and Production announced plans to export sport utility vehicles (SUVs) and other cars in the coming months. This move marks a milestone in the country’s manufacturing sector, reflecting its growing capabilities in producing high-quality vehicles.

According to officials from the Ministry, the initial phase will see the export of 50 locally manufactured SUVs from Toyota Indus Motors. This is part of a broader strategy to boost Pakistan’s presence in the global automotive market. Following the export of these SUVs, the second phase will involve the export of Toyota Indus’ Hybrid Corolla Cross.

The Ministry also revealed that Toyota Indus Motors has sent 100 mechanical engineers from Pakistan to Japan for specialized training. “The Pakistani workforce in Japan has been recognized for their exceptional skills and expertise,” the Ministry noted, highlighting the high standards of technical proficiency being developed within the country.

In a related development, the federal government is considering a proposal to increase the regulatory duty on used imported vehicles. This proposal is set to be part of the upcoming federal budget, scheduled for presentation on June 12.

Sources indicate that the regulatory duty on vehicles larger than 1800 cc may rise by 30 percent, while the duty on large vehicles could increase from 70 to 100 percent. A new 15 percent duty might be imposed on used vehicles up to 1800 cc, although new and old hybrid vehicles up to 1800 cc are likely to continue enjoying zero duty.

These measures are expected to make imported used vehicles more expensive, potentially boosting the appeal of locally manufactured options like those produced by Toyota Indus Motors.

The dual approach of enhancing exports while adjusting import duties underscores Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening its domestic automotive industry and expanding its footprint in the global market.
