‘Major surgery needed,’ says Naqvi after India drubbing

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has expressed deep disappointment in the national cricket team’s recent performance against India, signaling a dire need for substantial changes within the team.

Speaking to journalists following the match at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, Naqvi described the defeat as “disappointing in every sense.” Despite an impressive display by Pakistani bowlers, who restricted India to 119 runs after winning the toss, Pakistan suffered a narrow six-run loss.

“I know what is going on in the team and what are the reasons for losing,” Naqvi stated. “It seemed that a minor surgery would work but after this bad performance, I’m now sure that a major surgery is required. The nation will soon see a major overhaul.”

Pakistan’s batting lineup failed to capitalize on the bowlers’ hard work, collapsing in their pursuit of a modest 120-run target and ending their innings at 113 for 7. This reckless batting performance has left the team in a precarious position, dependent on the outcomes of other matches to determine their progression in the tournament.

Babar Azam, who won the toss and opted to bowl first on a tricky pitch, saw his decision pay off initially as Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf claimed three wickets each. Rishabh Pant was the standout performer for India with a quick-fire 42, leading his team to 119. However, Pakistan’s batting woes continued, with Mohammad Rizwan’s patient 31 being the only significant contribution. India’s Jasprit Bumrah was instrumental in sealing the victory, taking three crucial wickets for just 14 runs.

Naqvi emphasized the urgency of preparing a stronger team for future competitions, particularly the Champions Trophy 2025. “The time has come to give a chance to the outside talent,” he asserted. “We have to make the Pakistani cricket team one of the best in the world. The nation does not expect such a disappointing performance from the cricket team.”

The defeat has left Pakistan winless in Group A, with zero points from two matches after an earlier upset loss to hosts the United States. In contrast, India remains unbeaten with two wins from two games, solidifying their position at the top of the group.
