US sign ‘historic’ 10-year security agreement with Ukraine

In a significant move to bolster Ukraine’s defenses against Russian aggression and advance the country’s bid for NATO membership, U.S. President Joe Biden and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy signed a “historic” 10-year bilateral security agreement on Thursday.

The agreement, which was finalized on the sidelines of the G7 conference in Italy, aims to ensure continued U.S. support for Ukraine regardless of potential changes in American leadership, including the possibility of a Republican victory in the upcoming November election. The initiative seeks to cement long-term security ties and enhance Ukraine’s defense capabilities amid ongoing conflict with Russia.

During a joint press conference, President Biden emphasized the importance of this agreement, stating, “Our goal is to strengthen Ukraine’s credible defense and deterrence capabilities for the long term.” He further directed a message to Russian President Vladimir Putin, asserting, “You cannot wait us out. You cannot divide us.”

In addition to the bilateral security agreement, the G7 countries collectively agreed to provide Ukraine with a $50 billion loan, financed by profits from frozen Russian assets. This financial support is intended to stabilize Ukraine’s economy and support its war efforts.

President Zelenskiy praised the security agreement as a pivotal moment for Ukraine, describing it as a framework for a sustained effort to modernize the country’s outdated armed forces and a significant step towards NATO membership. Despite long-standing aspirations, Ukraine has not yet been granted NATO membership, largely due to the alliance’s stipulation that an attack on one member is considered an attack on all under its Article Five clause.

The agreement stipulates that in the event of an armed attack or credible threat against Ukraine, senior U.S. and Ukrainian officials will convene within 24 hours to discuss and coordinate an appropriate response. This provision underscores the commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity amidst renewed Russian offensives in the east.

Moreover, the agreement outlines plans to enhance Ukraine’s defense industry and expand its military capabilities, aiming to transform and modernize its defense infrastructure comprehensively.

This historic accord between the U.S. and Ukraine marks a strategic partnership that underscores the international community’s support for Ukraine and its aspirations for greater integration with Western defense structures.
