Biden Plans Major Changes to the Supreme Court

US President Joe Biden is gearing up to introduce major reforms to the Supreme Court. According to reports, Biden is set to present his proposals in the coming weeks, focusing on implementing fixed terms for judges and enforcing mandatory ethical standards.

American media outlets have revealed that the President has concluded extensive consultations with constitutional experts and members of Congress. The discussions centered on significant changes to the Supreme Court’s structure and operation.

Additionally, Biden is reportedly considering a constitutional amendment aimed at curbing the extensive immunity currently enjoyed by presidents and other high-ranking officials. This move follows recent Supreme Court decisions that have granted such immunity, notably a ruling that shielded former President Donald Trump from legal consequences related to official acts.

Biden has indicated that while he is cautious about announcing the specifics prematurely, a significant announcement regarding court limits is imminent. He emphasized the need for broad support on this issue, underscoring that he has been in discussions with constitutional scholars for three months to refine his proposals.

To implement these changes, Biden will require the backing of Congress, which will be crucial for enacting most of his planned reforms.

The urgency of these reforms has been highlighted by a Supreme Court ruling just four days after the first presidential debate, granting Donald Trump immunity for an official act. This decision prompted Biden to consult with a Harvard Law School constitutional affairs professor, weighing the arguments for and against the proposed reforms.

In his remarks, President Biden criticized the court’s decision, describing it as an attack on legal principles and a blow to the rule of law.

Since Biden took office, several Supreme Court actions have indicated a rightward shift. Decisions on cases such as Roe v. Wade, college admissions, federal agency decentralization, and Biden’s student loan forgiveness program have all tested the administration’s policies. The proposed reforms are seen as a response to these challenges and an effort to ensure a more balanced and ethical judiciary.
