In a bold and defiant address, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei declared that Israel has invited “severe punishment” upon itself, marking a significant escalation in tensions between the two nations. This stern warning comes in the wake of the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, a prominent figure in the Palestinian resistance and a revered ally of Iran.
“We consider it our duty to seek justice for those martyred in the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” stated Khamenei. The Supreme Leader’s remarks underscore Iran’s resolve to retaliate and uphold the legacy of Haniyeh, who he described as a martyr and a steadfast symbol of the resistance against Israeli occupation.
In a parallel statement, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian echoed Khamenei’s sentiments, emphasizing Tehran’s commitment to defending its sovereignty and dignity. “The Islamic Republic of Iran will defend its territorial integrity, honor, dignity, and pride, and make the terrorist occupiers regret their cowardly action,” Pezeshkian declared.
The Iranian state media released a poignant statement capturing the nation’s collective grief and determination. The statement read:
“Today, dear Iran is mourning its sharer of sorrows and joys, the constant and proud companion of the path of resistance, the brave leader of the Palestinian resistance, the martyr of al-Quds, Haj Ismail Haniyeh. Yesterday I raised his victorious hand and today I have to bury him on my shoulders.
Martyrdom is the art of men of God. The bond between the two proud nations of Iran and Palestine will be stronger than before, and the path of resistance and defense of the oppressed will be followed stronger than ever.”
Haniyeh’s assassination has sparked a wave of mourning and anger across Iran, with officials and citizens alike vowing to avenge his death. The heightened rhetoric from Iran’s top leaders signals a potential for increased conflict in the already volatile Middle East region.
