The US Department of Defense has said that the arrest of former military officers in Pakistan is an issue for Pakistan to handle on its own.
Pentagon spokesperson Major General Patrick Ryder emphasized that the US and Pakistan have a strong partnership. He stated that the US is committed to helping Pakistan achieve stability in the region and shared goals.
When asked about the arrests, Deputy Press Secretary Sabrina Singh said she had no further information and that it is a matter for Pakistan to address. She added that the US values its relationship with Pakistan and works with both military and civilian leaders there.
These comments come after Pakistan’s military media announced the arrest of Lt Gen (retired) Faiz Hameed, the former head of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). Hameed is facing accusations of corruption and misuse of power and is currently undergoing a military trial.
The military has also detained three other retired officers in connection with the case. This action is part of a larger investigation that started in May 2017, following a Supreme Court order, to maintain national stability.
