The Pakistani government is now closely watching people’s online activities. They have received permission to listen to phone calls, read WhatsApp messages, and control social media.
Recently, Pakistan completed a trial to use a firewall to manage social media. Though we don’t know the exact technology or how it works, reports say that Pakistan is getting this technology from various companies around the world.
According to Surveillance Watch, a group that tracks spying technology, Pakistan is buying surveillance tools from more than 15 companies. These companies come from countries like the US, China, and Israel.
Surveillance Watch provides a map showing which countries are buying spying services. The site, created by people concerned about privacy, aims to reveal which companies are involved in selling these technologies.
Pakistan is listed as a “Known Target” on the website. Some of the companies providing surveillance tools include Israel’s Q Cyber Technologies SARL, which owns the NSO Group known for its advanced Pegasus hacking tool. Other companies involved include Predator, Gamma Group, and I-Soon.
These companies offer various tools like facial recognition, smartphone spyware, video surveillance, and more. For more details, you can visit the Surveillance Watch website.
