45th death anniversary of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto marked today

Today marks the 45th death anniversary of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, the founder of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), as the nation pays homage to the political stalwart who left an indelible mark on the country’s history.

On April 4, 1979, Bhutto was executed at the Central Jail in Rawalpindi after being sentenced to death on charges of murder, a decision upheld by General Ziaul Haq’s regime. Reports indicate Bhutto endured torture leading to severe physical distress before his execution. He was laid to rest at his ancestral graveyard in Garhi Khuda Bakhsh in Sindh.

Born in Larkana, Sindh, on January 5, 1928, Bhutto hailed from a prominent political family. His father, Sir Shahnawaz Bhutto, served as the dewan (prime minister) of the princely state of Junagarh.

Bhutto’s educational journey took him to the University of Southern California and Oxford, where he pursued law before transitioning into politics. He held various ministerial positions, including serving as foreign minister under Gen Ayub Khan.

Breaking away from Gen Ayub’s administration, Bhutto founded the PPP in 1967, swiftly gaining popularity among the masses with his vision for socio-economic reforms. His slogan of “roti, kapra aur makan” (bread, cloth, and shelter) resonated deeply with the public, propelling him to victory in the 1970 general elections.

During his tenure, Bhutto introduced significant reforms, including Pakistan’s first unanimous constitution in 1973, land reforms, labor laws, and initiated the country’s nuclear program. His policies, however, faced criticism, particularly his strategy of nationalizing industries.

In a recent development, Bhutto was posthumously declared innocent by the Supreme Court in a presidential reference. To honor his legacy, the Sindh government announced a public holiday on the occasion of his death anniversary.

As the nation reflects on the contributions and controversies surrounding Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, his enduring influence on Pakistan’s political landscape remains a topic of discussion and debate.
