Pakistan speeds up search for oil, gas offshore

In a bid to enhance energy security, the federal government has announced plans to expedite the search for oil and gas within the maritime boundaries of the country.

According to details revealed, there will be a significant increase in efforts to locate oil and gas reservoirs in coastal waters. Prime Minister [Name] has directed authorities to enlist the expertise of foreign professionals within the next two months to bolster exploration initiatives.

Sources within the Petroleum Division have disclosed that substantial reserves of oil and gas are anticipated within the country’s two offshore basins, namely Indus and Makran.

Despite the potential, historical data shows a limited exploration effort. Over the course of Pakistan’s 77-year history, merely 14 wells have been drilled in the sea to investigate oil and gas prospects.

This decision comes on the heels of discussions held during the 2024 Petroleum Conference in Islamabad, where stakeholders underscored the necessity for collaborative endeavors to probe oil and gas reserves both offshore and onshore.
