The move comes with a condition: the cessation of attacks on cargo ships navigating these crucial maritime routes.
The Houthis, an Iranian-backed jihadist group, have been under intense scrutiny for their recent hijacking of the Japanese cargo ship, the Galaxy Leader, which occurred in November. Speaking to reporters, Tim Lenderking, the United States special envoy for Yemen, revealed that the U.S. would consider removing the Houthis from its list of designated terrorist organizations if they were to release the detained sailors. Lenderking emphasized that such a gesture would demonstrate “good faith” and indicate an “intent to de-escalate” on the part of the Houthis, as reported by Bloomberg News.

Meanwhile, in a separate development, Pakistani Senator Mushtaq Ahmed shed light on the deployment of Pakistan Navy ships in the Red Sea. Amidst speculation linking the deployment to the Hamas-Israel conflict, Senator Ahmed clarified that the move was unrelated to the ongoing tensions in Gaza.
Taking to social media platform X, Senator Ahmed posted a clarification he received from the Pakistan Navy ISPR Director General, reiterating that the deployment aimed at protecting Pakistan-bound shipping and international vessels traversing through the region. The statement emphasized Pakistan Navy’s commitment to maritime security and its solidarity with the people of Gaza in condemning human rights violations.
