ISIS-K has reportedly strengthened its presence in Afghanistan post the withdrawal of US forces in 2021, as per USA Today. Following this consolidation, the group claimed responsibility for a deadly attack on a rock concert in Moscow, resulting in the loss of over 140 lives.
Ahmed Zia Siraj, former chief of the Afghan National Directorate of Security, highlighted Afghanistan as a key stronghold for ISIS-K, noting its expansion since the departure of US troops. With an estimated membership of 4,000 to 6,000, ISIS-K has conducted terrorist attacks in neighboring countries like Pakistan, Iran, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan.
Tensions have escalated between ISIS-K and the Taliban due to conflicting interests and collaboration involving Afghanistan, China, and Russia. The group utilizes sophisticated propaganda tools such as the Al-Azaim social media platform and Voice of Khorasan magazine for recruitment and spreading extremist ideology.
Experts like retired Lt. Gen. Michael Ngata warn that ISIS-K’s influence and global network now exceed those of Al-Qaeda. Ghaffari, appointed as the leader of ISIS-K, actively recruits from diverse backgrounds including university students and non-Salafis in the region.
Despite international efforts to counter terrorism, ISIS-K’s resilience and adaptability present significant challenges, posing threats to stability and security across vast geographical areas.
