Protests against Israel intensify across US universities

Protests against Israel surged through the streets of Brooklyn and reverberated across university campuses throughout the United States, with demonstrators voicing demands for an end to civilian casualties in Gaza amid escalating conflict.

The demonstrations, which have gained momentum in recent days, have underscored a growing dissatisfaction within the United States, historically a key ally of Israel, with the trajectory of the conflict with Hamas.

Pro-Palestinian protests have notably trailed President Joe Biden, who has self-identified as a “Zionist,” with university demonstrations evolving into encampments drawing students and faculty of diverse backgrounds. These gatherings have hosted teach-ins, interfaith prayers, and musical performances.

In Brooklyn, tensions reached a standoff as New York police moved to arrest individuals for disorderly conduct during a large street protest on Tuesday, employing zip ties to restrain those who refused to comply.

Criticism of the police intervention came swiftly from the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), condemning what they deemed as an infringement on academic freedom. However, CAIR also highlighted concerns about inflammatory remarks targeting Jewish, Muslim, and Palestinian students.

Accusations of antisemitism and harassment from some protesters have been met with backlash from civil rights advocates, including the ACLU, who have raised concerns regarding free speech.

Amid the heated exchanges between pro-Palestinian and pro-Israeli demonstrators, particularly around Columbia University, congressional Republicans have called on President Biden to take action to protect Jewish students.

Some protesters have attributed off-campus incidents to provocateurs seeking to derail the core message of the protests.

At the University of California, Berkeley, known for its history of student activism, solidarity tents were erected in support of protesters at other institutions.

However, the demonstrations have not been without consequences. Mass arrests have occurred at New York University and Columbia University, prompting Columbia to transition to hybrid classes for the remainder of the academic year and ultimately move to dismantle the pro-Palestine encampment on campus.

The unrest has also extended beyond the East Coast, with California’s Cal Poly Humboldt closing its doors after pro-Palestinian protesters occupied a campus building, and police clearing an encampment at the University of Minnesota campus in St. Paul.

During the weeklong Passover feast, some Jewish demonstrators have used the occasion to voice opposition to the Israeli government’s military actions in Gaza, advocating for divestment from Israeli interests and conditional military aid from the United States.

The conflict, sparked by an attack from the Hamas resistance group, has resulted in significant casualties and displaced thousands in Gaza, intensifying calls for action and solidarity among protesters in the United States.

As tensions continue to escalate, the protests underscore a deepening divide within American society over the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and raise questions about the role of the United States in addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
