As torrential rains continue to batter the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) announced on Thursday the suspension of flight operations to Dubai and Sharjah until further notice.
In an official statement released today, the national flag carrier cited the adverse weather conditions as the primary reason behind the decision. The ongoing heavy rains have severely disrupted flight schedules, prompting authorities to halt operations for the safety of passengers and crew.
“The inclement weather has significantly impacted flight operations, necessitating the suspension of services to Dubai and Sharjah,” the statement read.
The UAE authorities have issued an orange alert in response to the “unstable” weather conditions prevailing across the region. According to reports from the Khaleej Times, the inclement weather is expected to peak between May 2nd and May 3rd.
In anticipation of the severe weather, precautionary measures have been implemented across various sectors in the UAE. Schools have transitioned to distance learning, while companies are encouraging employees to work from home. Public parks and beaches have been closed as a safety measure.
Notably, this spell of rain is forecasted to be less severe compared to the unprecedented downpour that struck the country earlier this month. Despite the reduced intensity, authorities continue to urge the public to exercise caution and follow safety guidelines.
The adverse weather conditions have also affected flights operated by UAE carriers, including Emirates, Etihad Airways, flydubai, and Air Arabia. According to Gulf News, these airlines have experienced delays, cancellations, and diversions due to the ongoing inclement weather.
Emirates, Dubai’s flagship carrier, has taken proactive measures by canceling flights to several destinations, including Istanbul, Nairobi, Cairo, Amman, Singapore, and Johannesburg.
As the UAE braces for further disruptions caused by the heavy rains, travelers are advised to stay updated with the latest information from airlines and authorities regarding flight schedules and safety precautions.
