US based Pakistani Dr Asif Mahmood appointed as USCIRF commissioner by US administration

In a significant move, the US administration has named Pakistani-American Dr. Asif Mahmood as a member of the US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), designating him as the Commissioner. The appointment was made by US House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries to this key post, marking Mahmood as the second Pakistani-American to hold such a significant role within any US administration.

Dr. Mahmood’s background reflects a diverse range of experiences, encompassing his roles as a practicing physician, human rights activist, interracial and interfaith community organizer, and philanthropist. He has been actively involved in advocating for human rights campaigns focused on South Asia, demonstrating a longstanding commitment to global issues.

The USCIRF, an independent bipartisan government agency, plays a pivotal role in monitoring the universal right to freedom of religion or belief abroad. Additionally, it issues policy recommendations to key stakeholders such as the President, Secretary of State, and Congress, while also tracking the implementation of these recommendations.

Notably, Dr. Mahmood’s appointment follows in the footsteps of Khizr Khan, a Gold Star father who previously served on the Commission. Khan’s tenure from August 2021 to May 2022 paved the way for Mahmood to continue the important work of promoting international religious freedom.

With a distinguished career spanning medical practice, political engagement, and advocacy, Dr. Asif Mahmood represents a dynamic force within both the Pakistani-American community and the broader political landscape. His endorsement by influential figures, including Vice President Kamala Harris and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, underscores his growing influence and support within Democratic circles.

Furthermore, Dr. Mahmood’s engagement with political leaders in Pakistan highlights his commitment to fostering international relations and addressing global challenges. His advocacy for the rights of Kashmiris during a historic Congressional hearing in 2019 underscores his dedication to promoting human rights and religious freedom on a global scale.

As Dr. Mahmood assumes his role as USCIRF Commissioner, his appointment is likely to attract attention and scrutiny, particularly from countries such as India, given his vocal stance on issues affecting the region. Nevertheless, his appointment reaffirms the United States’ commitment to championing religious freedom and human rights worldwide.
