In the perilous and challenging environments where United Nations peacekeepers operate, their courageous efforts often stand as a beacon of hope and security. Pakistan, a significant contributor to UN peacekeeping missions, reaffirms its dedication to global peace and security through the valor of its servicemen and women.
One such hero is Major Furqan of Pakistan’s Sindh Regiment, whose bravery during a critical operation near South Sudan’s Abyei region on January 28, 2024, saved numerous civilian lives. Amid an assault on a peacekeeping convoy transporting injured civilians, Major Furqan led the operation with remarkable courage, prioritizing the safety of others over his own.
Despite being targeted by enemy fire, Major Furqan’s resolute leadership ensured the safe passage of the convoy. His survival, which he attributes to the grace of Allah, stands in stark contrast to the tragic loss of Pakistan Army soldier Muhammad Tariq, who was martyred in the same operation. Tariq’s sacrifice highlights the profound courage and commitment of those serving in UN peacekeeping missions.
Reflecting on the harrowing events, Major Furqan’s wife conveyed a mix of anxiety and pride regarding her husband’s service. Her sentiments resonate with many families of peacekeepers who balance their fear with immense pride for their loved ones’ noble contributions.
After two months of intensive treatment at a UN medical center, Major Furqan returned to the operation site, where he honored the memory of his fallen comrade, Muhammad Tariq. This return underscores the deep bond and unwavering spirit among peacekeepers, as well as Pakistan’s steadfast commitment to global peace efforts.
Through the bravery of individuals like Major Furqan and the ultimate sacrifice of soldiers like Muhammad Tariq, Pakistan continues to exemplify its dedication to peace and security in some of the world’s most dangerous regions.
