Who could replace Biden as Democratic nominee?

President Joe Biden remains resolute amid mounting pressure to reconsider his bid for the 2024 presidential election following a contentious debate performance against Republican rival Donald Trump. Despite calls from within his own Democratic Party urging him to reassess his candidacy, Biden asserts his readiness to continue leading the nation for another term.

If Biden were to voluntarily withdraw or be compelled to step down by party leaders, scenarios for the Democratic nomination process at the upcoming Democratic National Convention in August are already being speculated upon. CNN reports that Biden currently commands support from a significant majority of Democratic delegates garnered through the primaries. In the event of his withdrawal, these delegates would pivot their support to alternate candidates, with the nominee being the one who secures the most votes at the convention.

According to BBC, should Biden resist calls to withdraw and the Democratic Party wishes to pursue an alternative candidate, they retain the authority to open the convention to consider other contenders.

Among the potential successors, Vice President Kamala Harris emerges as a leading candidate, having served alongside Biden since 2021. Her candidacy appears natural given her current role and alignment with Biden’s policies. However, other prominent figures are also being considered viable contenders.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, known for her progressive stance on issues such as abortion rights and gun safety, is seen as a strong candidate. Whitmer’s tenure has been marked by significant policy achievements, including Democratic victories in Michigan’s legislature.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, who gained prominence during his presidential campaign in 2020 and has since handled several transportation crises, including the East Palestine train incident and the Southwest Airlines scheduling crisis, has expressed interest in a potential candidacy.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, recognized for securing a key swing state in the 2022 elections and overseeing infrastructure improvements, also stands as a possible successor.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, known for his staunch support of Biden and progressive policies, including aggressive stances on abortion rights and gun control, rounds out the list of potential candidates.

As the Democratic Party contemplates its options in the event of Biden’s withdrawal, these figures are poised to play pivotal roles in shaping the future of the party and its leadership heading into the 2024 election cycle.
