Dozens arrested as pro-Palestinian protests spread across US universities

Pro-Palestinian demonstrations sweeping across American universities have intensified, leading to calls for the deployment of the National Guard. The escalation, witnessed at various institutions including the University of Southern California and Texas, has fueled tensions and confrontations between students and law enforcement.

House Speaker Mike Johnson’s recent remarks advocating for National Guard intervention have stirred emotions, drawing parallels to past tragedies such as the 1970 Kent State shootings. Johnson’s call to action comes amidst mounting casualties in Israel’s conflict with Hamas, further polarizing opinions on the matter.

The protests initially erupted at Columbia University in New York, where police intervention sparked controversy and led to multiple arrests. The demonstrations have since spread, with protesters demanding divestment from companies with ties to Israel and expressing solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.

President Joe Biden’s stance on the issue emphasizes the importance of free speech and nondiscrimination on college campuses, according to White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre. However, Johnson’s warnings of threats against Jewish students have intensified concerns over campus safety.

The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, which intensified following Hamas’ October 7 assault, as Israel killed nearly 34,000 Palestinians. While protesters continue to voice their grievances, the debate over the appropriate response and the role of law enforcement remains contentious.
