The District and Sessions Court in the federal capital today acquitted Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and several other prominent leaders in a case registered at Aapbara Police Station. Judicial Magistrate Yasir Mehmood delivered the verdict, which had been reserved last week following petitions seeking acquittal.
Among those exonerated alongside Imran Khan were senior PTI figures Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Sheikh Rasheed, Asad Qaiser, Shehryar Afridi, Faisal Javed, Raja Khurram Nawaz, and Ali Nawaz Awan. PTI’s legal team, comprising Advocate Sardar Masroof and Advocate Ansar Kayani, presented arguments on behalf of the defendants, emphasizing procedural and substantive grounds for acquittal.
The case stemmed from a protest staged by the PTI leaders against the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) Toshakhana verdict in 2022, which temporarily disqualified Imran Khan from holding office. The protest led to legal proceedings against the accused, alleging various charges related to public disturbance and defiance of legal directives.
Imran Khan, who has been grappling with multiple legal challenges since his removal from the premiership in 2022, has faced accusations ranging from corruption to terrorism. His incarceration since August last year has seen intermittent legal victories and setbacks, impacting his political stature ahead of recent national elections.
Despite today’s acquittal, Imran Khan remains entangled in ongoing legal proceedings, notably the ‘iddat’ case related to marital disputes, which is expected to conclude later this month. The outcome of these legal battles continues to shape the future trajectory of the former prime minister and PTI’s political landscape.
